The Doorbell

The doorbell seems to be the last thing a person thinks about when building or remodeling a home; maybe because it is such a small item. The door, itself, is carefully selected; the color is right, the material is the best and the glass is energy efficient break resistant. However, everyone overlooks the doorbell; that is until it rings unrelentingly or does not chime at all. At the present time, home improvement centers have many different models that a customer can choose from. It simply comes down to which one happens to be your favorite kind.

First of all, there is either a standard hardwired version or the relatively new wireless kind. Most people are familiar with the first one, but the wireless sounds a little more mysterious. It operates much like garage door openers do. However, you do have to make sure that the operative range will be strong enough to fit the needs of your home. Most of the time the long range type is needed; operates up to four hundred and fifty feet away from the control. Now, here comes the difficult part.

Multiple design, sound and chime options enter the picture. Holiday theme songs can now be programmed right into the doorbell software. Christmas party guests can be greeted with many of the most familiar carols. The homeowner can also make up his or her own message. This is quite a difference from the usual buzzer that we all knew.

Therefore, if you are in the market for a new doorbell, be prepared for a lot of decision making. There is even a new stainless steel hardwired version that actually lights up when pressed; much as the buttons in an elevator.

Stop Your Dog's Incessant Barking

Did you just get a new dog? Perhaps you got him from a shelter? He was so cute when you picked him out amongst all the other dogs. He seemed so shy and friendly. He was very well-behaved. But then you take him home and realize that your new dog loves to hear the sound of his voice. How do you know this? Well, because at 3:00 a.m. that first night you got a visit from your next door neighbor who tells you this. But, you already knew it because you had just spent the last four hours trying to figure out how to make him stop the incessant noise. Well, don't send him packing just yet. I've got some great tips on how to stop this bad habit that your new dog has already established long before you ever brought him into your home.

Dogs are going to bark. That's what they do instinctively. They will bark for a number of reasons. If he's barking at night when everyone is asleep, it's most likely that he is where he doesn't want to be and wants to be where you are. Dogs are people animals and they enjoy being around you all the time. It makes them feel secure and calm. Some breeds nee more attention than others so it's something that would have been worth researching prior to getting your dog. But, since you already have him and now you just need a solution to the problem, here's where I come in.

Although barking is a natural instinct, you can teach your dog the appropriate time to flex his vocal chords. The times you would want him to bark are for alerting you of a situation like a fire or a stranger is at the door or on your property. Those are situations that a barking dog is welcome to bark away. But it wouldn't be appropriate for him to bark every time you enter and leave a room. That would be downright annoying. So, how do you go about teaching him when the right time to bark is and the wrong time to bark?

Before you go and banish your dog to the bathroom or the garage, please know that there are some very real reasons why your dog barks.

1. Separation anxiety - When you first brought your new dog home, you probably spent an enormous amount of time with him to help him to feel comfortable and secure in his new home. Leaving him for any length of time, like going to work for eight hours a day and leaving him alone might make him feel lost and unloved. Just like a child who spends a lot to time with momma, the first few times you leave can be hard to handle. Barking may be his way of coping.

2. Attention seeking - Dogs love attention and some more than others. When they get the attention, they're fine. When they don't, they'll tell you by barking or other destructive methods where you'd actually wish he would only bark.

3. Noises - Dogs can hear noises from a long way off and any noise can distract him very easily. These noises may elicit a barking response such as a doorbell, a door being open; a noise on television like another barking dog, sometimes another dog barking in the household will get them all barking.

So now that you may know the reasons behind his barking, you can use this knowledge to help you determine the solution.

o Give him plenty of exercise. Take him for an extended walk before you plan to leave the house and it will tire him out. He may even sleep while you are gone.
o Practice leaving the house before the actual event occurs. Grab your keys and leave for a few minutes. Once your dog realizes that you are gone, he may bark. If he does, come back in, give him a command to be quiet. Repeat the exercise until your dog understands that you will return.
o Keep a leash on your dog before the event that triggers the barking. When he starts barking at the doorbell or for attention, pull on the leash and give him the command to be quiet and to stay.

Are you getting barking complaints? Before you pull your hair out, or your dog's hair, try these tips first.

Doorbell Repair For Ding Dongs

How to fix that shy doorbell button or doorbell itself if people are coming to your door and instead of the familiar ding dong or chimes, the only sound you hear is that of knuckles rapping or the door knocker knocking.

There are three parts to a doorbell: The doorbell button, the doorbell itself which most of the time includes the transformer and the wiring.

The Doorbell Button.

In my experience, this is not only the easiest to repair, but it is the most common reason doorbells refuse to obey your finger. Obviously, if the button itself is pushed in and does not pop back out, say the return spring is broken or the button has lodged itself in and won't show its face, the best thing to do is replace it.

Doorbells usually run on low voltage direct current as contrasted to your household electricity which is generally higher voltage and is alternating current. This means that although it is safer to work on the doorbell than the regular household electrical system, I always advise DIY's to turn off the power to the system they want to work on.

I want you to run one test before turning off the power. Pry, unscrew, or pull the reticent doorbell button away from the wall, depending on how it is attached. (TIP: If you buy a replacement doorbell button, you can "reverse engineer" the installation to see how to get access to the wiring.) Carefully tighten the terminal post screws. Then push the doorbell button. If it works, zip it up by pushing back or screwing back the doorbell button. If it does not work, bridge the terminals of the doorbell button with a flat bladed screw driver. Ding dong. Eureka. If it is still mute, put the doorbell button back into place and turn off the electricity to this system at the panel box.

The Doorbell

The doorbell itself, which includes the transformer, is the next easiest thing to replace. Once the power is turned off, open up the doorbell by taking off its cover, unscrewing it from the wall, disconnecting the wires and reversing the process with a new doorbell.

The Wiring

Checking the wiring for continuity is also pretty easy using a continuity tester. However, fixing faulty wiring by trying to replace it can be a gigantic waste of time, not to mention very frustrating. If it is the wiring, you have got a bit of a problem because you cannot realistically fix it by repairing the wiring. Fishing new wiring through your walls using the old wire to pull it works a lot better in theory than it does in my world. I have tried it many times. If I really have to do this, I now solder the new wire to the old and hope that the electrician who installed it in the first place did not staple or tack it in place. I have spent too much time and energy twisting wires together, attaching them together with tape, etc., and having them pull apart inside of the wall to do it without solder.

The Wireless Solution

However, the wonders of modern technology have provided a solution: there are now wireless doorbells that save a lot of wear and tear on both you and the plaster. In fact, unless the problem is a loose connection at the doorbell button (possible) or at the doorbell itself (unlikely), replacing the whole thing with a wireless system is the way to go.

Great Price Hitachi NT50AE2 for $59.98

Hitachi NT50AE2 18-Gauge 5/8-Inch to 2-Inch Brad Nailer Review

Have not used the gun long enough to tell you about durability but it rather similar to it's big brother- Hitachi NT65MA2 15 Gauge 1-1/4-Inch to 2 1/2-Inch Angled Finish Nailer(which I have plenty of hours on over the years)but with minor but important upgrade- side loading of nails. This may not seem important to some but on many trim applications you are not always using the same length nail. You can have several guns on your hip or you swap out the nails to fit the application. Side loading offers a couple of advantages - can easily remove and install (compared to rear loading) and it is easy to determine what length nail is in the gun. This will save you big time - in frustration and time!

Other features - good line of sight, jamb release (never jambed yet but it is there), fire modes (really? for trim?) adjustable exhaust, normal stuff any nail gun should have. I now have many of the newer Hitachi stuff to mate with some of the old and cosmetics don't really matter to me - they all work flawlessly. As long as they keep doing that I am happy. At this price it is a no brainer - get it!

This is my first nail gun. Don't know how I ever did home improvement projects without one. The size, weight, and operation of this unit is top notch. Easy to use and operate. I would recommend this unit to anyone. Great deal and very good quality!

Great Little Nailer - Matthew J. Simpson - IL
I've had this since last year now. I hate to write reviews before I've had a chance to actually use the product for awhile. In that time, it's fed absolutely flawlessly and I couldn't ask for a better performing nailer. It's light and easy to maneuver, has plenty of capacity, and all controls work as intended. You can get this for a song from time to time from amazon. I think it's a great buy on a great little tool.

Great Finish Nailer - James A. Augeri - Albuquerque, NM
I borrowed one of these from a friend to do some kitchen cabinetry, and several window valences for our house. It was so handy, and made things so much easier, that I just had to have one of my own. That fact became even more evident when I learned the friend would be moving away in a few months and I wouldn't be able to borrow it again! Bummer; but I got a new tool out of it. This is a great nailer for the range of sizes it supports (3/4 up to 2 inches). Easy to use, care for; everything.
