How Green Roofing Helps Our Planet

If you took a plane ride over most cities, you'd be greeted by black tar, asphalt, and gravel roofs on top of most buildings. These roofs, while effective at covering a home, are impermeable, allowing rainwater to flow right off of them. Additionally, their dark surfaces absorb heat. A typical roof is not energy efficient and won't cut down on the amount of heating and cooling used to keep the home at a comfortable temperature.

There is, however, an ecologically friendly solution called green roofing. This is a covering that has soil, compost, and vegetation such as plants, shrubs, flowers, and sometimes trees that are grown on top of the existing roof of a building. There is a root-safe, waterproof membrane to protect the building beneath from the downward growth of the root structures. A drainage system is also built in which allows for rainwater to nourish the plants living on the green roof rather than merely running off as drain water.

One type of such a roof is intensive. These roofs require a lot of labor to install and maintain. They need deep soil and regular irrigation. They are similar to a park setting and may have trees and sitting areas.

Another type of green room is called extensive. The soil does not need to be as deep and they require minimal maintenance. Instead they utilize plant material that is hardy but without having an extensive root system. They are not made to be used in a park like manner and look more like a field.

Green roofs have a much longer lifespan than traditional roofs. They reduce the energy costs of the building they give cover for by providing natural insulation. Intensive green roofing can serve as a park like setting, attracting not only people but wildlife as well. The vegetation serves to absorb and filter rainwater.

The green alternative roof can be used to grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers, which can improve air quality by giving off additional oxygen. It may also help to reduce noise pollution in the building structure underneath. There are few to no disadvantages to a green roof other than some buildings are not structurally sound enough to support the weight. Depending on the type of roof involved, there are maintenance costs involved but these are usually minimal.

As green roofs become increasingly popular, more and more companies are making it their business to get involved in helping the planet. Gray Market Tractors, What You Should Know and Check Before You Purchase

Before you begin to actually look at tractors you should know exactly what you are looking for.

Consider the following questions when shopping for a tractor.

What size of tractor do you need?

What are you going to be using you tractor for?

How often will the tractor be used?

Is the tractor going to be used to produce income? Of course, money is often a consideration when shopping for a tractor. Consider talking to people that own tractors and get their opinions.
Be an informed shopper and don't let anyone rush you. Below are some other things to consider before you begin shopping for a tractor.

Tractor Size

This is obviously the most commonly asked questions regarding a tractor purchase. The average compact tractor consumer owns a 1-5 acre piece of property and uses the small compact diesel mostly for mowing The other tractor consumers usually have between 10-30 acres and needs about a 30 horsepower to complete the necessary tasks.

What are you going to use the tractor for?, is of course, the most important question to answer. Is it just for mowing or will you be using a loader or backhoe on it? Will you be working on rocky or uneven ground?

Dollars & Sense

You should definitely shop around, however, don't forget that if you are comparing the prices of different makes and models of tractor it can sometimes be much like comparing apples to oranges. As with anything else, some makes and models are made better than others. A few more dollars upfront in price for a better quality of tractor makes more 'sense' than having to pay the cost of constant repairs and maintenance.

Different Makes and Models of Tractors

If at all possible, one of the best things you can do to make your life easier, is to purchase a tractor that is easy to get parts for. There are many foreign makes and models that are exact matches to domestic tractors. With that in mind, you can get a parts book for U.S. made tractor and purchase the corresponding part numbers that way. Some parts dealers don't like to sell parts for a gray market tractor. In fact, dealers of some brands of tractors are being told by a higher authority that they cannot willingly sell parts for gray market tractors.

Diesel Engines

Make sure you get a tractor with a diesel engine. Diesel engines have better performance and usually last longer than gas engines. Implements also work better on diesel engine tractors.

Horsepower

Approximately how many horsepower will you need? One horsepower (hp) is the amount of energy required to lift 550 pounds, one foot, in one second. In a tractor the energy is produced from torque and engine speed. A 100 hp tractor is one with a maximum of 100 horsepower available at the power-takeoff (PTO) outlet.
PTO

Nearly all Japanese tractor manufacturers include the power take off (PTO) horsepower (hp) in their model numbers; however, they do not include the engine (fly) hp. The first two numbers of the model number is where you find the PTO hp. The PTO hp is important because it is telling you the equipment working power of the tractor. Cylinders

Consider getting a three or four cylinder tractor. Three and four cylinder tractors are generally newer tractors and run quieter and smoother than the two cylinder models. Transmissions

There are several different types of transmissions for tractors. If you are not knowledgeable about tractor transmissions, it would be a good idea if you familiarize yourself with the different types listed below, so that when you go out to shop for a tractor you will well informed.
Manual transmissions on tractors were made to be shifted while the tractor is not in motion. This will cause a grinding noise due to the fact the two gears that are trying to mesh are rotating at different speeds. Manual shift transmissions are known for their durability, however, they are not considered to be very user friendly. The sliding gear and the collar shift are two of the more common transmissions.

Synchro Shift transmissions are basically collar shift transmissions (a type of manual transmission, see above). The difference is the added synchronizers, which makes it so that the gears don't grind if you are trying to shift while the tractor is in motion. Some synchro shift transmissions only have one pair of synchronized gears, while others have all speeds synchronized, including forward and reverse. The synchronization of forward and reverse is called the shuttle shift. This synchro shift is a dependable transmission, however, just like with automobiles, the more 'tricky' the tranny is, and the more chance there is of something going wrong or breaking.

A Power Shift transmission is an option well worth considering. Not those standard shift transmissions won't work just fine; however, often power shift is a nice little luxury, depending on what you are going to be using the tractor for. With a power shift transmission you can choose different speeds while the tractor is in motion, without needing to use the clutch pedal.

Hydrostatic transmissions operate in a closed loop, the flow of the pump is reversed, which in turn causes the tractor to reverse directions. The hydrostatic transmission is considered to be very dependable and is able to defend itself against 'operator difficulty'. Because this is transmission is controlled by a foot pedal, when you take your foot off of the pedal the tractor will stop, this is a nice safety feature. Hydrostatic is considered the best selection for such things as large mowing jobs because it allows for easy direction change and continual, unchanging speed.

Implement Adaptability

You will want a tractor with a Category 1, 3-point hitch and standard rotation PTO shafts. Most imported compact tractors are equipped with these items; however, there are a few that are not.

Implement Availability

Before you purchase a a tractor, make sure that good quality implements are available for it. It is a good idea to try to find a tractor with as many model-specific attachments as possible. These include things such as loaders and backhoes, which have custom-fitted mounts that are not interchangeable with other makes and models of tractor. You can often save money if you purchase the implements at the same time you purchase the tractor and some implements can be very expensive to add on at a later time.

Parts Manuals

Sometime parts manuals can be very hard to acquire. Make sure there is one available for the tractor you choose. Ask how much the manual is, sometimes the cost can be over $100.00 dollars.

Warranty

Find out what kind of a warranty comes with the tractor. Find out what it covers and for how long. Below is a checklist that you can print and take with you when you are out shopping for a tractor. Just check things off and take notes as you check over the prospective tractor.

Yes, it's a very long checklist, but well worth your time if you want to get a good quality tractor at a fair price.

Some things on the checklist may not pertain to the type of tractor you are looking for; however, we believe that most folks will find the majority of information here to be very helpful.

Your goal is to ensure that the tractor you purchase is all that the seller says it is and doesn't have any hidden problems. Make sure you know what you are looking for. Know what options you must have on the tractor and which ones you might be willing to compromise on or be able to add later.

Is the voltage meter (if it has one) charging a full 13.5-14.5 volts

How to Install Hardwood Flooring in a Few Simple Steps

You can do the installing of wood floors all by yourself by reading this article, and following these simple steps. So read on and get that perfect look without paying any installation charges.

Instructions:

Things you will need:

• Hammer
• Chalk
• Table Saw
• Nail gun
• Tapping block
• Miter Saw
• Angle Nails

The best part about doing the installation yourself is that it is inexpensive and each time you look at the floor there is sense of satisfaction that you did it all by yourself by following these simple steps.

Step one

Understand the quality of wood

First and foremost is to understand that kind of wood and you want to invest in. Hardwood is available in stripes, parquet and planks and these are priced according to their grades. The grade of the wood is decided by the part of the tree it has been obtained from, and the way it has been cut, the grain and color the wood is also based on this. Always purchase a wood that would that would compliment your space and your taste.

Step two

Contraction and expansion of wood

Once the wood has been delivered store in the hose for a few days so that it can expand and contract according to the humidity and temperature of the space.

Step three

Remove the old stuff well

Remove the old flooring, level the sub floor by using a self leveling flooring system. You can pour this self leveling liquid on the part of the floor that dips, the liquid will dry up to give a leveled floor. Also remove nails and tack from the floor.

Step four

Felting

You can roll roofing felt on the sub floor to prevent any water damage and also to prevent any damp or leakage from showing on the floor

Step five

Start with the longest

Start with the longest and the straightest wall and lay the first few planks perfectly straight across the room and nail them using a finish nailer, or wood floor nailer to keep the boards straight. Also the floor boards should be perpendicular to the joist under the sub floor.

Step six

Arranging

First arrange the boards on the floor before finally nailing them, this way you can follow the shade and the grain pattern to obtain a beautiful hardwood floor. Be tactful while laying the floor, use the defected boards on less conspicuous areas like sides of the wall.

Step seven

Nailing and firming

Space the nails 5-8'' apart and use a minimum of 4-5 nails on each board. Also keep checking the alignment of the boards with the help of a set square.

Step eight

Finishes for durability

Once the hardwood flooring has been installed, one can give finishes to make it durable and provide shine to the floor. You can apply a stain to achieve a particular color and then proceed with a coat of polyurethane or varnish or even wax which will act as a protective layer and also give shine to it.

Tips and suggestions:

Use a chalk to do the markings and always leave gap of 1/4" from the wall before installing, as wood has a tendency to expand. The gaps can be filled with wood trims later to get a perfect wood floor.

Did you know that the use of cordless power tools on the job site can actually save you money? According to a recent report from the National Council on Compensation Insurance, Inc., the oldest and largest provider of workers compensation and employee injury data and statistics in the nation, "Without a doubt, cordless tools do help reduce trips and falls, entanglements, and electrocution injuries," noted Mark W. Most power tool manufacturers today have created a cordless version of their nail guns. With the advent of the lithium ion battery technology, many of these tools are comparable in power durability, as long as you have two batteries: one battery charging while you are working with the other.

Paslode has taken a different approach to the cordless nail gun. In 1986, Paslode introduced the first cordless power framing nailer, the Impulse. The Impulse offered the power of a pneumatic without hoses. Still considered by many the industry standard, the Impulse features a patented combustion motor that provides freedom from compressors and cords allowing greater safety, portability and versatility. Basically, Paslode's nail guns are powered by a battery that sparks gas from a fuel cartridge.

Paslode's cordless Nailers have come a long way since 1986. The early models required daily cleaning, misfired enough to disrupt your work and replacement fuel cartridges were expensive. The new models however are relatively trouble free with only occasional misfires. The costs of the replacement fuel cells is $5 each. While this increases the operating costs of the Paslode nailer, the company says that each cell is good for about 2,400 shots for the IM250II. The Trim Master 18 and the Trim Master 16 use smaller cartridges, which are good for about 1,200 nails. Dated cartridges have an 18-month shelf life which is fine for the professional who uses them every day but something that the occasionally user should take into consideration. The fuel cells on the Paslode nailers work by mixing with ambient air so using a Paslode nail gun above 4000 feet in elevation requires a special "Blue Valve" high altitude adapter.

Wireless Doorbells have made great strides within the last few years making them more than just a viable alternative to wired doorbells. Simply put, cost is not a barrier to purchase as great wireless models can be had for $50 to $80.

4. Improved ranges and effectiveness. Another concern of the past was over the limited range of wireless doorbell systems and their conflict with other wireless devices. However, now most of the better models offer ranges in excess of 100 feet and multiple frequencies to remove any conflict with other wireless devices. Plus, long range models can be found that have ranges going from 300 to 450 feet and wireless intercoms go well over 1000 feet.

5. Great additions to existing wired doorbell systems. If you live in a large home or one that has a basement, attic, or garage, a wireless doorbell add-on works great for extending the range of your existing wired doorbell. No longer do you have to be concerned about missing a visitor while you are working in the garage or the basement. These add-ons come in either a plug-in or battery operated options. Both work great at extending the overall range of your existing doorbell system.

As you can see wireless doorbells offer a lot of advantages for the homeowner. When deciding on your next doorbell purchase, be sure to strongly consider a wireless doorbell. Their versatility and practicality make it a great addition to any home.

Barking and Dog Training

Stopping excessive barking is one of the most common reasons that people enroll in dog training. Dogs bark at a lot of things. They bark at strangers, they bark at other dogs, they bark at people they know. Some even bark at the moon.

Even worse, they bark at nothing.

If you're living with a barking machine, here are some training tips that can help.

1. Deny Access to Barking Posts

Most dogs have a favorite spot to settle in and cause trouble. Whether it's by the fence looking at to the street or by the door, they need a spot that gives them access to the neighborhood.

Deny him access to these spots. By re-arranging a few items, you can control the environment and limit his ability to see the items that get him going. This alone reduces the odds of your neighbors filing a complaint about your dog's barking.

2. Manage Outside Time

Without doubt the most annoying times for your dog to bark are in the morning and at night. It's bad enough that he makes noise during the day, but if you are messing with your neighbor's sleep, they'll get upset for sure.

So avoid letting him out early or late. When he does go out, be sure to supervise him and bring him in as soon as he's done doing his business.

3. Bark Control Devices

There are several quality bark control items to consider. Citronella spray collars emit a poof of scented air in response to barking. Sonic collars emit a high pitched sound that irritates dogs. There are also sonic area control devices that will emit a high pitched sound in response to barking within the area.

Any of these will provide instant relief to you and your neighbors while causing only a low level of discomfort for your dog.

4. Doorbell Dog Barking

Many dogs bark loudly when the doorbell rings. To fix this you should stop letting him interact with people at the door. To him the doorbell equals excitement because he anticipates a guest that he will meet and sniff and maybe play with.

Not permitting him to meet people at the door cuts the excitement way down.

Another thing you can do is practice with a friend. Have them ring the doorbell and don't answer. The more times he hears the doorbell without anything else happening, the less exciting it will be for him.

If the barking behavior persists, try filling a squirt bottle with water and spraying him a
few times. This is painless but sends the message that you disapprove of the behavior.

5. Exercise and Entertainment

Dogs will also bark because they are bored. Take him for more walks and provide him with interactive toys. An exercised dog rests; an unexercised dog looks for trouble.

Do Dogs Think?

The first thing I have to say is "don't under estimate your dog." Dogs have brains similar to ours, believe it or not. They learn much in the same way that we do, from experience. They remember things much the same as we do and some dogs have very long memories.

They would rather do things that create happy memories and avoid doing things that bring back unpleasant memories. And it has been scientifically proven that dog's have emotions, they can feel such things as love, anger, being frightened and even jealousy. If that is not enough they can even read our body language.

Dog's even have the ability to generalize and discriminate between things. It might surprise you that they are better at it than we are. All animals have the ability to acquire knowledge, the important thing is that they have to know how, where, and when to use the knowledge they acquired.

How do you know if your dog has this ability, well, first of all discrimination is the ability to decide the difference between two things or events as being unrelated to each other. Generalization on the other hand is to see the relationship between things.

So how do you know if your dog has this talent? Let's take a doorbell ringing as an example, if your dog hears a doorbell ringing on the television set and does not respond to it, but will go running if the front doorbell rings, he/she has the ability to discriminate. However, if the doorbell on the television and the front door bell excites your dog, he/she is generalizing that both are the same.

The tables can be turned, however, if you take your dog out of its element; for instance a dog that behaves very well at home, goes to a new location and suddenly does not obey commands. The problem is your dog realizes that the new location is different, which is discrimination, but does not realize that the same rules should apply, so he/she lacks the ability to generalize. In this situation you need to keep taking your dog to new places, while continuing to train him/her to obey the commands that it does at home.

Many dogs learn to dislike people who are in uniform, who wear a hat or badge or who just dress differently from the normal dress the dog sees most of the time. The dislike can also come from the dog having a bad experience with someone who was dressed differently. The dog will then generalize that all people who look that the "bad experience person" are bad and should not be treated nicely.

The same goes for a trip to the veterinarian. If the dog has had a painful experience at the vets, it is easy for the dog to generalize that riding in the car, the smells in the waiting room and people dressed in a veterinary type uniform are unpleasant and so he/she will not get into the car.

So what is a pet parent to do? If you will take a few moments to understand the difference between discrimination and generalization, you can help your dog learn that all things are not created equal. With a little effort on your part and the help of a few friends you can modify your dog's unacceptable behavior and help create in your dog's mind the difference.

Train your dog in several different places and at different times of the day, adding changes and distractions slowly into the mix. By doing this you are instilling in your dog that no matter where he/she is there are certain rules that have to be followed no matter where the location is.

Have friends help you to teach your dog to discriminate between two situations. In the case of uniforms, or good guys and bad guys, if you want your dog to be able to discriminate between the two, have some friends wear funny hats or a uniform type costume and make some threatening kinds of action toward the dog or you. Being careful of course that no one gets hurt. The dog then gets the idea that this kind of dress and action is not good and will bark and react to it.

On the other hand if you want the dog to see that all people dressed in a strange way are not bad, have the same people at a different time, approach the dog in a friendly manner thereby showing the dog that all people dressed strangely are not the enemy.

This will take practice, but is worth the effort if your dog is not comfortable around uniforms, hats and other unusual items like umbrellas or canes. Whatever you want your dog discriminate between will take several repetitions and as they saying goes practice makes perfect.

Home Video Intercom System

A home video intercom system serves as an extra layer of security and protection for all private residences.

These intercom systems are simple to operate - once a visitor presses a buzzer or doorbell, a picture of that person will appear on a compact LCD monitor (often 4 - 6 inches in size), which is installed inside. This lets a homeowner see who is calling prior to needing to answer or communicate with those at the door. These intercoms often come equipped with two-way audio, so if possible to have a conversation without opening the door.

As well as viewing a visitor via a dedicated monitor attached to the intercom system, it is also an option to view or play back recorded images via a PC, DVR or TV screen. In addition, for viewing later in the day when it is dark, some cameras come installed with infrared LEDs for clear nighttime viewing.

In order to protect the actual camera it often comes housed in a solid outer shell, this aims to protect against the changeable weather conditions, as well as offering some level of vandal protection.

Installing one of these intercom systems is a straightforward project for those with basis DIY skills. Often, the intercom unit is connected via the existing door bell wiring, and for ease in hook-up with the receiver or monitored, these can be wall-mounted or free stand on a counter. The maximum distance between the two different components can range from 90 - 300-feet, so its important to check this prior to purchase.

A home intercom system, with tiltable camera lens provides a simple and quick solution for monitoring a homes entry point, with an ability to communicate prior to answering a door.

Perhaps you enjoy bike riding - ride or if you're like me and enjoy working out - get a membership at your local gym. Did you know that most gyms offer a FREE 2-week membership? You never know who you might meet while doing what you love or trying something new.

Check yourself. If you are attracting what you don't want, it's time to take a look at the man in the mirror. Remember, like attracts like. Make sure you love yourself adequately, take great care of you and feel good about you so that you can attract the like.

The Perfect Music Press Kit Part Two - Photos That Count

One of the toughest things to do, as far as getting signed goes, is to earn the chance to present your stuff to an A&R. Once you finally get that chance, the last thing you'd want to do is blow it by not having the best of the best materials you have to offer presented to him or her. When opportunities knock, they won't repeatedly ring the doorbell. They'll just proceed to the next potential resident. Nor will they wait as you get dressed. You need to be ready at all times. In the second installment of this "The Perfect Music Press Kit" article mini series, I'll be showing you how to take that perfect photo that not only conveys your persona but will also be easy on the pockets.

Let's talk about the photo itself. Before you even think about finding a photographer, you should think about exactly what kind of photo you are trying to take. Regardless of the quality of the picture, it means nothing if the photo has nothing to do with you or your music. Brainstorming is the best way to go in my opinion. Grab a sheet of paper and write down everything that you feel relates to your music. If you make up-tempo, out of control rock music, I kind of think about an angry mob or a huge stampede of some sort. Don't worry if your list doesn't get long. You just need some kind of idea so that the picture can be molded around it.

Now grab another sheet a paper and draw out what you would like the picture to look like. You don't have to be an expert artist, you really only need the general idea of it all. Let's say you're using the angry mob example. If there were three members in the group, I'd have you all doing something crazy being part of the mob, but I would still have you all standing front and center. One person pretending to pull their hair out, another screaming ripping of their shirt, and another doing something else off the wall. Now each of you should find a way to incorporate your instruments into all this. With this set up, you give a description of not only your music, but how each member has a hand in the music.

The Perfect Music Press Kit Part Two - Photos That Count

One of the toughest things to do, as far as getting signed goes, is to earn the chance to present your stuff to an A&R. Once you finally get that chance, the last thing you'd want to do is blow it by not having the best of the best materials you have to offer presented to him or her. When opportunities knock, they won't repeatedly ring the doorbell. They'll just proceed to the next potential resident. Nor will they wait as you get dressed. You need to be ready at all times. In the second installment of this "The Perfect Music Press Kit" article mini series, I'll be showing you how to take that perfect photo that not only conveys your persona but will also be easy on the pockets.

Let's talk about the photo itself. Before you even think about finding a photographer, you should think about exactly what kind of photo you are trying to take. Regardless of the quality of the picture, it means nothing if the photo has nothing to do with you or your music. Brainstorming is the best way to go in my opinion. Grab a sheet of paper and write down everything that you feel relates to your music. If you make up-tempo, out of control rock music, I kind of think about an angry mob or a huge stampede of some sort. Don't worry if your list doesn't get long. You just need some kind of idea so that the picture can be molded around it.

Now grab another sheet a paper and draw out what you would like the picture to look like. You don't have to be an expert artist, you really only need the general idea of it all. Let's say you're using the angry mob example. If there were three members in the group, I'd have you all doing something crazy being part of the mob, but I would still have you all standing front and center. One person pretending to pull their hair out, another screaming ripping of their shirt, and another doing something else off the wall. Now each of you should find a way to incorporate your instruments into all this. With this set up, you give a description of not only your music, but how each member has a hand in the music.
